Cystatin C: new Point-of-Care assay for renal diagnostics and diabetes monitoring

Thursday, 28. November 2013

Eurolyser introduces a new test paramter for smart and CUBE point-of-care instruments: Cystatin C

Background

Cystatin C is a parameter to monitor renal (kidney) function. Many influences, such as Diabetes, contrast-induced acute kidney injury, or imperfect medication dosages can reduce kidney function. With the Eurolyser Cystatin C Assay you can determine the GFR (Glomerular Filtration
Rate) quickly and easily.

Why measure Cystatin C?

Compared to the existing method to measure GFR using serum creatinine the Cystatin C parameter holds a number of benefits:

1. Cystatin C is far more sensitive than creatinine, which allows detection of reduced renal function much earlier. Creatinine levels in the blood only starts rising after a loss of kindey function of roughly 50% (!) – this phenomenon is called the “creatinine blind area”. In contrast, Cystatin C levels depend directly on the glomerular filtration rate and is not effected by tubular secretion.

2. Due to the higher sensivity an early reaction – and treatment – is possible even at little GFR reduction.

3. The assay can be used on particulary young or old patients (< 18 and >70 years) with diabetes, hypertension or myocardial diseases – specifically the group of patients for which the serum creatinin method is not recommended.

Benefits for the treating physician

The Eurolyser Cystatin C test is executed at the point-of-care and takes only 7 minutes!
To determine the Cystatin C levels, not more than 20µl whole blood, taken directly from fingertip, are necessary!

This results in the following advantages for various fields of use:

Resident doctors
Using Eurolyser Point-of-Care instruments, monitoring of medication dosage can be done in your own praxis – no need to wait endlessly for laboratory results! 7 Minutes is all it takes.

Radiology
The Cystatin C test allows measuring the GFR before and after using contrast. Easly, fast and efficiently.

Pediatrician
The Eurolyser test is particularly suitable for renal diagnostics for patients younger than 18 years of age. Additionally, due to the small amount of finger blood necessary (only 20µl) there is no need for big needles!

Emergency operations / Critical procedures
To determine Cystatin C in a timely manner is impossible even for hospitals with an own laboratory. A quick-test instrument in the A+E Unit or the ER, however, is the perfect solution: in just 7 minutes the Cystatin C level can be determined – even on weekends or under the most stressful conditions!
