Eurolyser extends its veterinary diagnostics product line-up with another assay for
Solo point-of-care instruments: Phenobarbital
The parameter
Phenobarbital is a barbiturate used to control convulsions and to loosen up cramps in epileptic animals. The new Eurolyser phenobarbital assay aids veterinary physicians in diagnosing phenobarbital levels in minutes, without the need for assistance from a larger remote laboratory.
Why measure phenobarbital?
If an animal has been previously treated with phenobarbital, it is recommended to check the concentration prior to administering further dosages, to avoid giving a wrong dosage.
Applications in diagnostics
Considering the applications discussed above, the Eurolyser phenobarbital assay is anticipated to be of particular interest for veterinary physicians who want to faciliate their day-to-day operations, receiving results in minutes.
Method
The Eurolyser phenobarbital assay is a quantitative turbidimetric test for the measurement of phenobarbital in serum and plasma. Latex particles coated with phenobarbital are agglutinated when mixed with phenobarbital antibody solution. When a sample containing phenobarbital is used, the agglutination reaction is partially inhibited, slowing the process of agglutination. The agglutination causes an absorbance change (546nm), inversely dependent upon the phenobarbital contents of the patient sample.
Measurement range/Sensitivity
Range: 0 – 100 µg/ml
Sensitivity: 10 µg/ml
